Annual SPE-KASEG meeting on April 3rd, 2012

The SPE-KASEG meeting will be held in Bee Won restaurant in Orlando at 6:30 pm on Tuesday, April 3rd, 2012. Transportation will be available from the Conference Center to the restaurant. 2012 Student Travel Assistant (STA) program

The Korean American Scientist-Engineer Group (KASEG) is accepting Student Travel Assistant (STA) applications. This program is to promote attendance at ANTEC and provide communication opportunities with senior scientists who are already working in a variety of industries and academia. This program is only offering for students in North America this year, maximum $200 per application. Persons interested in applying for this assistantship must submit a letter indicating interest and qualifications relevant to ANTEC.

Submission Period: 02/20/2012 to 03/18/2012

2012 Best Student Paper Award

It is our pleasure to announce the Best Student Paper Award for 2011 ANTEC^® to be presented at the SPE-KASEG meeting. The SPE-KASEG would like to encourage all students and postdoctoral fellows participating in the upcoming ANTEC 2012 to submit their papers to the SPE-KASEG for consideration to receive the Best Student Paper Award.

The Best Student Paper will be selected by the Selection Committee, consisting of Past Presidents and senior members of the SPE-KASEG from both academia and industry. Please submit papers according to the following guidelines:

Meeting summary for Jan 19, 2012

Attendees: Prof. Chan I Chung, Dr. Kun Sup Hyun, Dr. Kap Sik Seo, Prof. Myung Ho Kim, Prof. Kye Hwan Lee (Secretary), Dr. Jushik (Jay) Yun, Ho-Seon Jin (President)

1. Annual meeting planning preparations

a.       The annual meeting date

It was considered to change from Tuesday evening to Monday evening, but the committee decided not to move to Monday evening because SPE reception event is scheduled on Monday night. Our annual meeting will be on Tuesday evening

b.      The meeting place & sponsoring companies’ presentations

We had two separate meetings: one meeting at the conference room and Korean restaurant. The committee decided to have one meeting at Korean restaurant. Prof. Chung volunteered to monitor a presentation time for only five minutes per company. Presenting companies were suggested to bring company brochures and provide a brief introductory presentation.

c.       Korean restaurant

Bee Won restaurant was selected with Prof Chung’s recommendation. Kye Hwan Lee and Ho-Seon Jin will finalize meeting arrangement, meal and drink. It was suggested for providing bus transportation between the conference center and Korean restaurant. Prof Lee will investigate our options for transportation and bring them at the next meeting.

d.      The meeting atmosphere

Rather than one long one-by-one introduction, the name tags were suggested. The committee needs to pay more attention to young participants and encourage active social networking time with better table arrangements.

2. SPE Special Interest Group (SIG) application (during 2012 ANTEC)

In order to join SIG, more elected officers (Membership committee chair, and Technical committee chair) are needed. It means that by-law must be changed at the annual business meeting. Proposed by-law changes were suggested to bring before annual meeting and review them.

3. Other assignments & activities

a.       Best Paper award committee

Dr. Sehyun Kim at PolyOne/GLS volunteered to be chair this year. Up to three awardees were suggested to encourage more student attendance. Detailed announcement will be posted at the web site.

b.      Annual fund raising committee

The committee decided to continue fund raising for all sponsoring companies. Prof Myung Ho Kim and Ho-Seon Jin will work together for fund raising. President Jin will send a letter to last year’s sponsoring companies. Professor Kim will contact and get fund raising confirmation. Fund raising update will be reported at the next meeting.

c.       Student travel assistance program

As another effort to encourage students’ attendance, Prof. Lee and President Jin will prepare for an invitation letter. Maximum amount is $200.00. This is only for students for North America (US and Canada), especially preparing for car pools.

d.      Service recognition award selection

The committees are encouraged to bring recommendations to next meeting.

4. Web-site management and announcements

The web site is being renovated and updated shortly. Ho-Seon Jin will send e-mail communication for all members shortly and provide web address for better and continuing communication.

5. Next meeting

The committee will have a meeting once a month until April. The next meeting will be scheduled on mid February. Meeting agenda will be distributed before a meeting.

The committee would like to recognize Dr. Chung Park and Bushitol’s contribution for providing “go-to-meeting” teleconference for SPE KASEG.
